Devon EcoChurch at Eggbuckland

posted 22 Feb 2017, 01:08 by Martyn Goss

On Sunday 12th February 2017 at St. Edwards Church, Eggbuckland, Plymouth we launched the A Rocha Eco Church Scheme as well as celebrating its one year anniversary.

We had green lights shining on the altar and a green background on our screens. Our guest speaker, Dr. Hilary Marlow from Cambridge is an A Rocha Trustee and specialises in theology and the environment. She was both informative and encouraging, teaching on how we, as Christians, can be good stewards, caring for the earth and the environment out of our love for God.

The liturgy and prayers were taken from those suggested by A Rocha and made the service a very moving and powerful time, recognising what we, as humans, have done to our planet and finishing with a commitment to do all we can, both as a church and as individuals, to start caring more for our environment.

We also had David Curry, our local A Rocha representative, a display of A Rocha material and a board depicting ways in which we can practically put what we have learnt into  practice.

Our Eco Church Co-Ordinator, has already registered us on the Scheme and had on display the gauges that show where we are at as a Church and the areas that we need to work on, one of the biggest challenges will be our very old and beautiful building.

The service was followed by a tour of our Living churchyard and an opportunity to see all that has been achieved by our Ground Steward and his Greenfingers Team.
