Spare Food is Share Food

An exciting new community food project has just been launched in Exeter, seeking to prevent good produce from being thrown away or incinerated.  Devon and Cornwall Food Association has been redistributing so called ‘waste’ dairy products and frozen foods in Plymouth for over a year.  Now the same is happening for the rest of Devon.

Based at premises in Sidwell Street, ‘The Depot @ 171’, has already begun passing on chilled foods to community groups and charities in the city area.  It cannot give food direct to the public, only to registered organisations such as Food Banks or Soup Kitchens.

Steering group chairperson Kim Chenoweth said, “At a time when we discard 30% of our produce, there is also growing food poverty in Devon.  The new recession and austerity measures are contributing to people going hungry in our affluent world.  That cannot be right and DCFA is trying to alleviate hunger, reduce food waste and decrease carbon emissions.  It’s win, win, win!”

This new project, which operates in Exeter without paid staff, is currently recruiting volunteers to develop its work.  It is also seeking food manufacturers, processors and retailers who may be able to donate in-date produce which would otherwise be destroyed, as well as needing equipment such as freezers and chillers.

Those interested are asked to contact Charles on 07713631728.  The Centre at 171 has been secured through Healthy Planet, the London-based charity which brings empty town centre shops back into use by community organisations.

DCFA is supported by the Diocese of Exeter, Methodist Church in Britain, Exeter Community Initiatives, Exeter Quakers, other local congregations, charities and community groups, and Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw.
